The 2020 installment of the Milwaukee Made Project takes us back to the 1940s, but more specifically 1940s Milwaukee. This pivotal generation in the history of the United States of America included the Winston Churchill becomes British Prime Minister, Polaroid cameras are introduced, LP Vinyl records were invented, and the conclusion of World War II. In Milwaukee the 1940s represented a tremendous shift in gender representation in the workforce. In order to assist in aiding the US efforts during World War II almost all manufacturers converted the business to manufacturing wartime equipment. In order to meet the demand, women entered the workforce at a rate never before seen in Milwaukee’s history. In fact, by 1944, 25 percent of Milwaukee’s industrial workforce was made up of women, 20% of who had children.
